Royal Lochnagar Today

Royal Lochnagar is now owned by Diageo, which is one of the largest spirit producers in the world. We are the smallest of Diageo’s 28 Malt Distilleries in Scotland. However, we are proud to say that Royal Lochnagar still retains much of it’s original charm. This distillery farm buildings have remained largely unchanged since the 1845, which gives a feeling of real character. Today ,we employ a team of six highly skilled operators to produce our fine single malt whisky. The production methods are traditional and rely on age old traditions and craftsmanship.

The Distillery Visitor Centre was refurbished in 1998 to incorporate a shop which stocks a large range of single malt whiskies. We employ a small team of Distillery Guides to ensure you have a memorable visit and are always happy to provide help and advice in the shop.

What makes Royal Lochnagar Distillery unique

Our recipe for success:

  • 6 highly skilled operators
  • 25,000 litres of fresh Scottish spring water
  • 5 ½ tonnes of specially selected premium barley
  • 60kg of distillers yeast

Method of production for our finest malt whisky:

  • Mill the malted barley to the perfect consistency of GRIST.
  • Using our traditional open top mash tun, add heated spring water to the grist and drain off hot sugary worts
  • Slowly cool the wort before adding yeast
  • Leave fermenting for 5 days to ensure a beer like wash with a distinctly grassy character
  • Using our magnificent copper pot stills, together with the traditional worm, distil slowly and carefully.  This will ensure we capture all the flavours and purity of the spirit.
  • Fill by hand into specially selected oak casks and leave to mature for 12 years.

If you can’t wait for 12 years to sample this delight, you can always try one we made earlier!
